If you know anything about Mala and Mantra (and if you're reading this, you probably do), then you'll know that empowering women is at the core of what we do. It's right there in our brand tagline, after all: "Consciously created style empowering women through wellness." And as a woman-owned brand with an all-female team, a fair trade cooperative of women artisans in the Philippines, and a majority-female customer base, we take this mission incredibly seriously. That's why we help provide our artisans with fair wages, a safe working environment, and a sustainable way to support themselves + their families. (Learn more about our talented artisans here.) It's also why we design mindful mala jewelry that empowers women to take control of their wellness, spirituality and peace of mind.
So it's no surprise that we're excited to celebrate International Women's Day today (March 8). This powerful day is a celebration of the social, economic, cultural + political achievements of women all around the world. But it's also a time to reflect on the many ways in which we—both Mala and Mantra as a brand and you, our supporters—can continue to #pushforprogress in terms of gender equality.
Here are just a few ways you can do so, according to the organizers of International Women's Day themselves:
1. Maintain a gender parity mindset.
Any chance you're given, question a lack of or inequality of women's participation and inclusion in events or opportunities, both on a personal and professional level. While you're at it, be the person who nominates other women for roles and opportunities, and always, always support women on their endeavors.
2. Challenge stereotypes + bias.
Whenever you hear someone (even another woman) make an assumption about women or challenge the limits of what they can do, speak up and question it. An open dialogue is critical for any kind of progress, but make sure to use inclusive language as much as possible.
3. Make women more visible.
The key to showing everyone the amazing things women can do is to give them the chance to do those things. Offer openings + opportunities to women first when possible, and never assume a woman doesn't want to take on a role until she's turned it down. Nominate + support women for leadership positions, and throw your support behind women when they're in these roles.
4. Celebrate women's achievements.
Value the opinions + ideas of the women around you, and make sure to acknowledge + credit them with their success at every opportunity. You can also identify a female role model you admire, and share their story + successes with your friends, family + colleagues.

How to love yourself a little more (so you can love others, too).
As a mala bead brand, mindfulness and meditation are at the core of everything we do at Mala and Mantra. But we wanted to start the year on an especially mindful note in 2018, with a bunch of new mindfulness-focused products and features that we’re excited to share with you this month.
Up first: our brand new #bemindful Collection! As part of our Crafted for a Cause program—which gives back to causes and organizations that are close to our heart—we teamed up with The Center for Mindfulness at UC San Diego Health to create a capsule collection of pieces designed to help you live a more mindful life. Made with sustainable blackwood and robles wood beads, as well as a trio of semi-precious gemstones—angelite to increase awareness, tiger’s eye to focus the mind and prehnite to ease meditation—the #bemindful Collection is designed to help you stay aware and grounded in the present moment. Even better, for every piece sold from the collection, we’ll donate $5 to The Center for Mindfulness to support mindfulness research and community outreach. Learn more about the collection + The Center for Mindfulness here.
We’re also incredibly excited to introduce a product that we’ve been working on for quite some time now—and one that’s a first for Mala and Mantra: Mindful Meditation Kits! These kits are sort of like Meditation 101 in a box, and come with everything you need to get started with your meditation practice. Each beautifully packaged box includes a 108-bead mala necklace, an essential oil scented candle from Pure Plant Home, Frankincense essential oil from Body Bliss, an assorted crystal, a mini-Buddha incense holder and access to an online guided meditation from our Mindful Meditation Master, Micole Noble. Shop the kit here, and keep an eye out throughout the year as we roll out more meditation + mindfulness tools like it!
Speaking of meditation, we’ve also introduced a few new pieces of content to help deepen your meditation practice and teach you all about mindfulness + meditation. This includes our Monthly Mindfulness Journal, a downloadable journal that helps you keep track of all the ways you’re mindful throughout the month, with prompts that help you think more deeply about mindfulness + meditation. Get access to your very own journal when you sign up for Mala and Mantra emails here.
And then there’s the Malas + Meditation 101 section on our website, your new go-to spot for learning all the basics about malas, meditation, mindfulness + more. We’ll be updating it every few weeks with new content, including guided meditations from some of our most mindful friends + meditation teachers. Take a peek at the first few articles now, and check back soon for more mindful content.
Wishing you a mindful New Year!
This New Year, we're putting resolutions aside and focusing instead of setting intentions for 2018.
